Seven signs you have bedbugs - and what to do next

Bedbugs are the most common call-out we get in Nairobi. Here is how to confirm them before you spend a shilling on treatment - and the mistakes that spread them.

Bedbugs arrived in your home as hitchhikers - in luggage, a matatu seat, second-hand furniture or a visitor's bag. It says nothing about how clean your house is. Confirming them early is what keeps the treatment small and cheap.

What to look for

  • Bites in lines or clusters that appear overnight, usually on skin left uncovered while sleeping.
  • Dark blood spots on sheets and pillowcases.
  • Black droppings like ink dots along mattress seams and bed frame joints.
  • Shed translucent skins and tiny pearl-white eggs in mattress piping.
  • Live bugs the size of an apple seed hiding in seams, screw holes and socket plates.
  • A sweet, musty smell in a heavily infested room.
  • Welts that keep appearing in the same household members.

The mistakes that spread them

Do not move infested bedding or furniture into another room - you carry the bugs with it. Do not spray supermarket insecticide on the mattress and hope; it drives survivors deeper into furniture and walls. And do not throw the mattress out as a first step - it is usually the room that is infested, not the mattress.

What to do

Wash and hot-dry bedding, vacuum seams and crevices and empty the vacuum outside, then call us. A single-room case treated early is quick; a house-wide infestation that has bred for months takes repeated visits. Send photos of what you are seeing on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether it looks like bedbugs before you book anything.
